Shipping outside Nigeria for the first time can feel more complicated than it needs to be, mostly because of the paperwork. The good news: once you understand what each document does, the process is straightforward. Here's what's typically involved.

Commercial or proforma invoice

This states what's inside the package, its value, and who it's from and to. Customs in the destination country uses this to assess duties and confirm the shipment isn't misdeclared. Be accurate here, since undervaluing goods to reduce duties can lead to delays, fines, or seizure.

Waybill (air waybill or bill of lading)

This is the contract between you and the carrier (DHL, UPS, or another partner) and acts as proof that the shipment was handed over for delivery. It includes sender and receiver details, tracking number, and service level.

Packing list

For multi-item shipments, a packing list itemizes exactly what's in each package or box. This speeds up customs inspection since officials can match contents against the list without needing to unpack everything.

Certificate of origin (for some goods)

Certain products, especially those qualifying for reduced tariffs under trade agreements, need a certificate confirming where they were manufactured. Not every shipment needs this. Ask your carrier if your product category requires it.

Import permits or licenses (for restricted items)

Some categories, such as food products, cosmetics, electronics or pharmaceuticals, may require an import permit in the destination country. This varies significantly by country and product, so it's worth checking before you ship anything in these categories.

Identification

A valid ID (national ID, international passport, or driver's license) is required from the sender for most international courier bookings, in line with carrier and customs regulations.
